Cards for Dementia

Overview.

Cards for Dementia is an easily accessible and practical tool for people who have family members affected by Dementia.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that affect the brain. Although most people experiencing dementia are older, sometimes younger people are affected too. Considering everyone’s experience of dementia is different, common symptoms include loss of memory, and loss of cognitive abilities.

Sadly, Dementia has a poor reputation in our society. It often is portrayed by the media as the worst disease one can suffer from and once a person is diagnosed this person’s life has pretty much ended. People with dementia however, even though the disease may change the way they behave or respond, are capable of leading a happy and fulfilled life, when treated with tolerance, acceptance and love.

It is important to understand that loss of memory doesn’t necessarily mean loss of identity. Not being able to remember makes it sometimes hard for family members or friends to connect to their loved ones. People however have to recognize, that this is the disease not the person they know and that they, as healthy people are responsible to act and adapt to the change in order to assure the wellbeing of their loved ones.

In contrast to already existing information texts the cards are supposed to deliver tips in a fun and easy to understand way. The design aims to make learning enjoyable and fun and tries to show that happiness, humour and love do exist in the world of a person with dementia.
